Information and communication technology to enhance continuing professional development (CPD) and continuing medical education (CME) for Rwanda: a scoping review of reviews

Abstract Background Access to high quality continuing professional development (CPD) is necessary for healthcare professionals retain competency within the ever-evolving worlds of medicine and health. Most low- middle-income countries, including Rwanda, have a critical shortage limited access CPD opportunities. This study scoped literature using review articles related use information communication technology (ICT) video conferencing delivery professionals. The goal was inform decision-makers relevant suitable approaches low-income country such as Rwanda. Methods PubMed hand searching used. Only written in English, published between 2010 2019, reporting ICT were included. Results Six included this study. Various modes (face face, pure elearning blended learning) (Internet-based non-Internet based) reported. All types approach enhanced knowledge, skills attitudes. Pure comparable face-to-face better than ‘no intervention’, learning showed mixed results compared traditional learning. Participant satisfaction attributed ease use, easy interactive content. Conclusion enhance acceptable with most improving attitude. For intervention work effectively, courses must be well designed: needs-based, based on sound educational theories, interactive, access, affordable. Participants possess required devices technological literacy.
